Make a to-do list which ranks the items that need to be done from highest to lowest.
Second, approach the business with a plan of organization. Be organized about how the day is spent. Keep track of all pertinent documentation with labeled files. Use contact management software to keep track of who has called, and follow-up with those calls as soon as possible. Those calls, depending upon the type of business, may be the lifeblood of the business.
Third, make sure that all of the mundane tasks related to the business are always done. The mundane tasks are the little things which keep the business going. They are things like checking email, following up with prospects, updating websites, checking ad responses and making adjustments. If these little tasks are not performed on a regular basis, then the business will surely grind to a halt.
Forth, and most important, treat the business like a full-time business and not some part-time hobby business. Approach the home business with the same professional attitude that one would have with any other business. Dedicate a full eight hour day to working the business. Obviously, being at home allows some flexibility about how those eight hours are scheduled.
Although a lot of people would like to have a successful business in their homes, it takes someone with a good attitude, good organization and follow-up skills, good time management, and someone with the discipline to work at home and not be distracted by television, friends, and family.
